Clint Sloan and The Carpenter Shop
|
I’ve always been proud to say that I am from Pleasant Hill, MO. This being a small town southeast of Kansas
City, I was raised with the old school values of hard work and honesty. My ancestors were one of the first to
homestead here in 1833 when Pleasant Hill was just 'The Village of Pleasant Hill'. Missouri had not become a
state at that time. They were my great, great, great grand parents. So I can be proud to say that I am one of the only
true natives of our town. With that being said, you can rest assured that I am not one of those contractors that will
be leaving the area, never to be found again, after completing your job.
Not counting the 6 years of Junior high and High school woodworking and shop classes, I have 39 years in the
construction industry. Fresh out of high school, I started roughing in houses and learning that field. After 8 years I
was able to join Midwest Research Institute’s maintenance department. During my 11 years as their resident
carpenter, I learned the old school way of cabinet making, remodeling of offices, laboratories and maintenance.
During the first Gulf War the industries learned the new word of downsizing. I was then back to roughing in
houses and remodeling houses that I bought and sold, as the times would allow. After 5 years I was lucky enough
to get hired on at a remodeling company to continue my education of my preferred field of expertise. In 2001 I
decided it was time for me to reap the benefits of my own knowledge and work for my self. At MRI we always
answered the phone in the shop “Carpenter Shop” so I couldn't resist calling my new business ‘The Carpenter
Shop’.
During all of the years of observing others running their businesses, I learned several things I would never do to
my customers. I’ve never learned the art of ‘Selling a blind man a pair of glasses’ so you can rest at ease I won’t
try to sell you something you don’t need or want. I will also not tell you what you are going to get whether you
like it or not. You are my boss and it is my job to do your job with your ideas and quality as much as your budget
will allow. We don’t ask for money up front and never charge more for the labor and materials, as we progress
through your job, than has been performed. We try to work as clean as possible, pick up our debris and sweep or
vacuum the floor at the end of the day. I have a tendency to treat customers like they are a friend so there won’t be
any problems expressing ideas or thoughts. Working in a relaxed atmosphere will produce better results for both
of us in the end. I treat everyone with the respect they deserve knowing there are dishonest contractors out there
giving the rest of us bad reputations. You won’t find me showing up dressed in a suit and tie carrying a brief case
to bid your work and sending others back to do the job. It will be me that you see on your job site performing the
work you requested. We work in the areas of Pleasant Hill, Lee's Summit, Belton, Raymore, Peculiar, Blue
Springs, Independence, Kansas City Metro, Holden, Harrisonville and not limited to just these areas.
My son, Chip, my daughter, Chara and I pitch horseshoes competitively and belong to the National Horseshoe
Pitchers Association. We pitch in a league in Peculiar, MO during the summer months along with tournaments
around the state and have also played in several different states. We pitch, during the winter months, at an indoor
facility in Liberty, MO. Plenty of fun with a family style atmosphere for all ages of men, women, children and
teens.
